It is a simple yet stirring portrait of a young Irish woman who came to America in the 1950s. Eilis Lacey left her family behind and traveled by ship to America.

As a fan of character-driven stories, I enjoyed this immersive tale that follows Eilis from her home in Enniscorthy, Ireland, across the rolling sea on a ship to Brooklyn, where a Parish Preist sponsors her new life.

What struck me were the details of Eilisโ€™s daily life; in some books, they might have dragged down the plot. But here, they give you a sense of her place and beingโ€”her loneliness and dislocation.

Eilis finds work and meets Tony, an Italian-American. When she and Tony begin to fall in love, Eilis is called back to Ireland due to heartbreaking news. As Eilis travels back and forth across the ocean, she carries secrets and pieces of her heart.

The author left a few things in the air. Luckily, book two ๐‹๐จ๐ง๐  ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ is coming out in May.

I paired my reading with the gifted audiobook from @simon.audio, which enhanced the reading experience.

Successful screenwriter Finn Masters just landed his dream job writing for Neighbors, one of Hollywoodโ€™s highest-rated, longest-running sitcoms. The only downside? It will put him back in proximity of the showโ€™s universally adored, optimistic, altruistic star, Lavender Rhodes, who has been inadvertently ruining his life since they were school chums in England. But she doesnโ€™t even know she destroyed his acting career and wrecked his relationship with the love of his life.

Heโ€™s not about to let this woman yank yet another dream out from under his feet. In fact, he realizes heโ€™s been given the ideal opportunity to plot his payback: spinning her character in shocking new directions. What could go wrong? Only everything. As Finnโ€™s not-so-brilliant plot backfires one scene after the next, catching him in the blasts, heโ€™s forced to think about this impossible, infuriatingโ€ฆand maybe even lovable woman in an entirely new light.

Charlotte is a young woman navigating her way through the depths of grief as she recently watched her father die. Struggling to focus on her coursework at college, Charlotte receives a frantic call from her friend Evie. Evie is pregnant.

Charlotte decides to leave school to spend time with Evie at the charming inn Evieโ€™s parents own. Itโ€™s located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She hopes the water, sand, and Evie and her family will help clear her mind, but a storm is brewing over the sea and in her heart.

The beautiful setting is such an active and stirring part of the narrative. The coastal sounds, the waves’ rhythm, and the storm’s tempest all reflect the characters’ emotions.

The story explores Charlotteโ€™s grief with authenticity. But I loved the friendship between her and Evie. Both girls are facing a future they hadnโ€™t foreseen – a future they are uncertain of – yet together and with honest assertions of sadness and longings, they move forward; their friendship is an anchor as the storm blows around them.

The writing here is comfortable, with much sincerity and heart. Character growth, friendship, a little romance, and the vivid coastal setting make me want to call this a beach read –  just know that it’s a little more about loss and love than happily ever after.

Deeply wounded as a child, Mariela Rosario grew up with pain that seemed too profound to heal. She fell into toxic habits of drug use, people-pleasing, and shame. Then, alone in her house in 2015, Mariela experienced a miraculous encounter with God that prompted her to turn away from those destructive patterns and begin attending church. As her relationship with Jesus deepened, she launched a ministry to help other women overcome their past hurts so that they, too, could walk in freedom and joy. Because when a womanโ€™s God-given purpose is activated, she speaks fire.

In this transformative book Mariela draws on the biblical story of the garden of Eden to explore eight lessons about shame that will nourish us and lead us to live authentically, powerfully, and freely. As Mariela shows us how we can return to sweet communion with God and ourselves and live in community with others, she helps us see

  • why the seed of shame might be holding us back from Godโ€™s call,
  • what it looks like to let go of the need for othersโ€™ approval,
  • who our real enemy is and why he will never win, and
  • how to bravely own our stories so we can help others find freedom too.

Feelings of shame can feel so overwhelming that itโ€™s hard to know how to move forward. She Speaks Fire will give you the encouragement and validation you need to take that first stepโ€”and every bold step after thatโ€”to live an authentic and loving life on fire for God.

This was a fresh, fun debut! I enjoy stories about characters who are feeling lost, lonely or needing a second chance – and thatโ€™s exactly what Dasia needed.ย

When we first meet Dasia she is starting yet another temporary position with a London-based healthcare provider. She only tells us that she quits each job every few weeks, so she canโ€™t hurt anyone. This sets up a bit of a mystery, but ultimately, itโ€™s her backstory that will tug on your heart.

Dasia has been keeping the world at arm’s length to ensure she doesnโ€™t hurt anyone or get hurt in the process. But suddenly, she is in a position to help, to make a differenceโ€”is it worth the risk?

This delightful story demonstrates Dasiaโ€™s growth as she forms friendships, reveals her past, and even opens her heart to love.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ฐ๐š๐งโ€™๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ is the eloquent and poetic story of two famous poets from the 19th century. โฃ

โฃ

In 1845, both Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett were poets but their lives were very different. Elizabeth, though from a wealthy family, was sickly and confined much of the time to her room. Robert was younger and much poorer but loved to travel.

โฃ

Both poets admired each otherโ€™s work, Robert so much so that he wrote to Elizabeth declaring his love for her although he had not yet met her. But he was unworthy of Elizabeth in her familyโ€™s eyes. โฃ

โฃ

This is undoubtedly an unconventional love story. The constraints of the time period are evident as Elizabeth was controlled by her father and brother. Their family wealth was gained from the sugar plantations and, thus, the people they owned. โฃ

โฃ

True to a love poem, Robert desired to whisk Elizabeth off to Italy to marry her and allow the Italian sun to heal her. โฃ

Whether you are a poetry fan or not, youโ€™ll find these two historical figures and their desire to spend their lives together fascinating. This is a rich and layered tale that examines privilege, wealth, colonialism, early feminism, and, of course, love.

From USA Today Bestselling Author Aileen Erin comes an all-new action-packed, romance-filled paranormal series.

๐€๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค:

There are three things I know without question.

One: demons are real.

Two: humans make awful mistakes that get them in demonic trouble more often than youโ€™d think.

And three: Iโ€™m the only one who can help them.

I straddle the line between the mortal and spiritual realms every day. People might think theyโ€™re two different places, but theyโ€™re not. They lay on top of each other. Itโ€™s messy, and thatโ€™s why so many people need my help. Since I was little, Iโ€™ve been called all kinds of names – unusual, abnormal, even insane. Which is fitting since they keep throwing me into mental facilities. Iโ€™ve been in and out of them my entire life.

But no matter what people say, no matter what Iโ€™m risking, I will always help those in need.

Because thereโ€™s an endless war carrying on all around us, every minute of every day. One that canโ€™t be seen by mortal eyes. But I can see it, the spiritual battle for mortal souls, and Iโ€™m working hard to make sure my father is on the losing side.

My father – Astaroth, Satanโ€™s general – is why I can do this. Heโ€™s why Iโ€™m not normal. I hear my father whispering my name each night, his taunts echoing through the spiritual realm. Heโ€™s hunting me, and I know the day will come when I must face him again.

Every portal I open could be the one that finally pulls me back to Hell, and I wonder if I will be brave enough, strong enough, good enough to fight him.

My name is Samantha Catherine Lopez, and I am Nephilim. This is my story.

The war is over, and young Fanny Fabricant finds herself a widow. While most women are returning to domesticity now that the men are home, Fanny needs a job to support her young daughter. She lands a position as a secretary to the โ€œqueenโ€ of radio serials (not to be referred to as soap, but it kind of is).ย

The story is character-driven, with strong women like Fanny and her independent Aunt Rose leading the way. While I would have liked to have explored the characters more deeply, not doing so kept the book on the more lighthearted side.

New York City and the changing cultural and political landscape of the 1950s made for an interesting backdrop. The author worked in some of the then-current historical events, such as the โ€œred scareโ€ and blacklisting of screenwriters, which brought an authentic feel to the narrative.

This was a fresh and entertaining look at life in the post-WWII years, especially for women.

Books about designer babies, DNA, and celebrity stalking are nothing new, but ๐๐š๐›๐ฒ ๐— combines the three to create an intriguing thriller.

Set in the not-too-distant future, a black market platform called The Vault is dedicated to DNA theft. They pick up any trace of DNA off cups, straws, silverware, or a stray hair, saving the cells that can now be used for creating babies from celebrities and the wealthy.

A famous singer, Trace Thorne is tired of paying a ransom for his own cells. He doesnโ€™t want to be a father to hundreds of stalking fans. So he pays Ember Ryan to be his bio-security and to clean up his DNA everywhere he goes.

But then the unimaginable happens – a woman approaches them, claiming to be pregnant with Trace’s child.

This is a fast read. The technology and science arenโ€™t too far-fetched, so it’s easy to follow along and get lost in the story. I thought I knew what was happening up until about two-thirds of the way in, when I realized something much bigger was at play.

This touches on the ethical questions of bio-engineering and it may make you question just how safe your DNA truly isโ€”a captivating and thought-provoking speculative thriller.

What I thought might be another war novel burst into a literary symphony.ย

In German-occupied Bruges, Belgium, World World I is coming to an end. Evelien, an artist, is trying to care for her familyโ€™s safety while her husband is at war.

The story takes on notes of intrigue and danger when Evelien is approached by the resistance, asking her to steal names from her German employer. She knows the risks but weighs the cost of the prize – a letter from her beloved husband.

Art is a beautiful melody that plays throughout the narrative. Evelien desires to be an artist while safeguarding a prized painting; you can feel her longing and confinement.

The lyrical prose, which beautifully illustrates all the emotions Evelien wrestled withโ€”duty, guilt, loveโ€”is what really drew me into this story. It is a heartbreaking story of love, war, and even an unlikely friendship.
