Thank you @dartfroggco and @scribnerbooks for this gifted copy.ย
It is a simple yet stirring portrait of a young Irish woman who came to America in the 1950s. Eilis Lacey left her family behind and traveled by ship to America.
As a fan of character-driven stories, I enjoyed this immersive tale that follows Eilis from her home in Enniscorthy, Ireland, across the rolling sea on a ship to Brooklyn, where a Parish Preist sponsors her new life.
What struck me were the details of Eilisโs daily life; in some books, they might have dragged down the plot. But here, they give you a sense of her place and beingโher loneliness and dislocation.
Eilis finds work and meets Tony, an Italian-American. When she and Tony begin to fall in love, Eilis is called back to Ireland due to heartbreaking news. As Eilis travels back and forth across the ocean, she carries secrets and pieces of her heart.
The author left a few things in the air. Luckily, book two ๐๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ is coming out in May.
I paired my reading with the gifted audiobook from @simon.audio, which enhanced the reading experience.
