While at first, this might appear to be a futuristic romance between a man and his pleasure bot, it’s really quite a layered, edgy story about misogyny and toxic masculinity and how humans need to be better. 

Annie is a human-like robot that Doug, her owner, has custom-fitted to look and feel similar to his ex. Doug has also had Annie switched to “Stella mode” or pleasure mode. Annie is also an autodidactic AI model—this means she’s learning. 

The more she experiences the control, the abuse, and the mind games of not only Doug but other men, such as Doug’s friend, the more Annie dabbles with the idea of her own consciousness or “free will.”

The author did a great job of getting you attached to Annie, feeling sympathy for her – a robot mind you – but you also see how messed up these men are as they abuse their power and force over Annie. 

For most of the book, I felt this was a unique cautionary tale about the not-so-distant future. Will this be what AI relationships might look like? So female objectification will only continue to increase as you can build your own bot? Annie, tries to overcome, to outsmart the programming though – you go girl!

There is a twist at the end that is even more terrifying for what the future in robotics may hold, but I’ll let you find out what that may be. 

A provocative debut! I’ll be watching for more from this author.

Books about designer babies, DNA, and celebrity stalking are nothing new, but 𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐗 combines the three to create an intriguing thriller. 

Set in the not-too-distant future, a black market platform called The Vault is dedicated to DNA theft. They pick up any trace of DNA off cups, straws, silverware, or a stray hair, saving the cells that can now be used for creating babies from celebrities and the wealthy. 

A famous singer, Trace Thorne is tired of paying a ransom for his own cells. He doesn’t want to be a father to hundreds of stalking fans. So he pays Ember Ryan to be his bio-security and to clean up his DNA everywhere he goes. 

But then the unimaginable happens – a woman approaches them, claiming to be pregnant with Trace’s child.

This is a fast read. The technology and science aren’t too far-fetched, so it’s easy to follow along and get lost in the story. I thought I knew what was happening up until about two-thirds of the way in, when I realized something much bigger was at play. 

This touches on the ethical questions of bio-engineering and it may make you question just how safe your DNA truly is—a captivating and thought-provoking speculative thriller.

The Hidden Realm of Angolin has had a self-imposed policy of isolation; they have lived this way for centuries. Until an enemy discovers them and, of course, is determined to conquer them. 

If you’re a science fiction fan, this book is for you.

The author’s world-building was cinematic, vividly describing the places, spaces, and atmosphere.

I appreciated how terms for technology and equipment weren’t over-explained. For instance, “the PTS and light-bending taroc fiber hid him excellently.” This allowed me to feel like a part of their world and be immersed in the story. 

There was plenty of action and combat as the protagonist, Lieutenant Dharmen Tate, learned of a plot by some of his fellow Angolinian officers to join forces with the enemy invaders. Dharmen was a well-developed character as we got to see both his personal life and him as the hero battling for Angolin.

This is such a unique short story collection! 

These brilliantly crafted stories blend elements of sci-fi, AI, and immortality with politics, romance, and even about a disease turning people into cannibals (read into that what you will). 

The stories are not set in the distant future. So maybe this is satire as well, or perhaps it’s a warning – of the peril we may face if technological advancements are left unchecked. 

I had not read Bora Chung before, such as her 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲, but I am so glad I could experience her work. Although these stories are definitely disturbing, haunting, even cautionary tales, she writes with sparks of humor and such clever insight that you won’t be able to put them down.

This was a whole lot of fun. Mariana is a neuroscientist touring the facility where Carter Cho, a tech, is working on a secret Hawke Particle Accelerator. While Mariana is in the building, the Hawke reactor explodes, and Mariana and Carter are sent into a time loop. 

The two end up on a cycle together, reliving the previous four days before the accident occurs repeatedly. Every four days – things reset. While the time loop concept is not new, Mike Chen adds humor, emotional moments, and tons of food and pulls out some pretty cool sci-fi twists. (Don’t worry; you won’t have to dust off your old physics books to enjoy this read.)

As the two try to figure out a way to break the loop, they discover they just might be falling in love. I’ll “loop back” around to the beginning – this is a whole lot of fun.

I will admit that I’m not a big sci-fi reader, but I loved this book! 

Millennium Harrison is an outstanding character. I usually don’t make comparisons, but I kept thinking that he was like Ove, from 𝐴 𝑀𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑂𝑣𝑒, but living on the moon. Mil is a cantankerous, know-it-all oxygen farmer who was once a commander in the space force. Now he has earned himself the reputation of a, well, I can’t say, but he’s happier on the moon.

But Mil stumbles onto the moon’s hidden and off-limits Exclusion Zone, leaking radiation. Mil feels this must be a cover-up, and he, of course, begins to nose around. What he has discovered is a deadly scheme, leading to the death of an astronaut and an explosion. The Space Agency, run by Mil’s estranged daughter, makes Mil the prime suspect, trying to shut him down. But when the fates of the moon and life on Earth hang in the balance, they may turn to none other than Mil.

Not only is this fast-paced, but it has all the elements of a great mystery and adventure. The author does a fabulous job of describing what our world might be like in the not-so-distant future – with space exploration. The emotions come in with Mil and his relationships, especially with his granddaughter, girlfriend and the tension with his daughter. He may come across as ornery and distant, but this man on the moon just might capture your heart.

In 2050, Jacqueline, a reclusive billionaire, sets in motion the “Inside Project.” While some have fled to space, this is her answer to climate change and the toxic political culture of the times.

The Inside Project is a corporate-funded, climate-safe, artificial living space built to be Jacequile’s vision of utopia. One problem: there’s not enough room for everyone, so only women will be allowed.

Although this seems straightforward, it becomes convoluted on many fronts. The people who apply for a spot are not made aware that only women will be accepted. Through the narrative, we also learn that the term “woman” is a tangled mess that sets the course for the Inside Project’s twisted agenda. 

This book offered a very interesting concept of what a man-free society might look like, radical feminism you could say. It’s really about people’s idealisms and corporate greed. What I wanted more of was the characters and the applicants. While a diverse cast, I still felt I didn’t know them as individuals, not just their causes.

I heard there is a sequel, so maybe more character development and growth are coming. Until then, 𝑀𝑒𝑛 𝑁𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑁𝑜𝑡 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦!

It took me a while to get invested in the story, but what captured my attention was the diversity within the characters – especially the representation of disabilities. Be prepared for a quest-like adventure and the cliffhanger opens up the door for book two.

I just started this one, but already I’m intrigued by this young witch, Resa, who is living on a distant planet. I’m enjoying the mystical worlds and the magic and the black-and-white illustrations are a great bonus.
