โ€œA triumphant debut novel.โ€ โ€•Booklist

โ€œComplex and haunting.โ€ โ€•Library Journal

In this gripping debut novel from acclaimed Nebula, Sturgeon, and Locus Award-winning author Samantha Mills, a disgraced soldier fights to make sense of her world and the gods who abandoned it. The Wings Upon Her Back is an action-packed, devastating exploration of the brutal costs of zealous loyalty.

Zenya was a teenager when she ran away to join the mechanically-modified warrior sect. She was determined to earn mechanized wings and protect the people of Radezhda, the city she loved. Under the strict tutelage of a mercurial, charismatic leader, Vodaya, Zenya finally became Winged Zemolai.

But after twenty-six years of service, Zemolai is disillusioned with her role as an enforcer in an increasingly fascist state. After one tragic act of mercy, she is brutally cast out and loses everything she worked for. As Zemolai struggles for her life, she is must question her sect, their leader, and even the gods themselves.

Jake Saunders is a hero; he has saved earth once before and plans to propose to his girlfriend on the 10th anniversary of his heroic feat.

Butโ€ฆwhile his girlfriend is off-planet, Jake is again called into battle. The Earthen Legion and its allies believe that they are dealing with pirates – it’s worse. Jake soon realizes he is dealing with his nemesis – whose ultimate goal is to control the galaxy!

Can Jake find a way to save his girlfriend and the world?

This is a series, so there is some unfinished business at the end, but donโ€™t let that deter you. I thought Jake was a great character and I loved some of the cultural references peppered in. And who doesnโ€™t love a hero, right? Set in space, with tons of adventure, action, and a bit of humor thrown in, this was genuinely entertaining.

Cloud Cuckoo Land | Audiobook Review & Sudio Earphones

Cloud Cuckoo Land

Anthony Doerr

Publisher: Scribner

Pub Date: 9/28/2021

4.5 / 5

I fear I will do this work a disservice if I try to explain it in my mediocre mumblings. Let me just say that at first I was confused. There are three timelines and settings – very distinct, very unique. But one thing that does bind them is Diogenes’ manuscript, “Cloud Cuckoo Land.”ย

Modern-day Idaho, we begin at a public library where fifth-graders are rehearsing a play based on a translation of Diogenes’ manuscript, “Cloud Cuckoo Land,” with the guidance of Zeno, an ex-GI.

Transported to 15th century Constantinople, we meet Anna, a seamstress for priests with a curious mind. When she finds the “Cloud Cuckoo Land transcript,” she flees the monastery housing and meets young Omeir. Omeir has been ridiculed for his cleft lip and finds companionship in an ox. He and Anna set out together with the transcript.

And then there is Konstance, who is on an interstellar spaceship. The ship is on a mission to Beta Oph2. Konstance is sealed in a room with a computer named Sybill who is not responding to Konstanceโ€™s commands because it is busy reading “Cloud Cuckoo Land.”

Although the story took patience to let it all come together, the individual timelines are brilliant, almost like short stories. Once I saw the cohesive thread between the stories, I understood why Anthony Doerrโ€™s work is so highly praised.

The Vanished Birds {book review}

The Vanished Birds

Simon Jimenez

3.5 / 5

Iโ€™m starting to think that science fiction isnโ€™t my jam. I keep trying a few books here and there and I just canโ€™t seem to settle into them.

The Vanished Birds centers around Nia Imani, the captain of a cargo transport ship, who seems to be running from the past. Nia and her crew travel through the โ€œpocketโ€ between her world and many worlds in the galaxy. On one trip to harvest seed from a planet where her friend Kaeda lives, a small boy crash lands next to Niaโ€™s ship. The boy is alone and doesnโ€™t speak. Kaeda convinces Nia to take the boy with her. Although Nia and her crew are uncertain as to who and what this boy truly is, the boy becomes Niaโ€™s passenger.

As Nia and the boy travel through space, they are both searching for something. In the vastness of outer space, the boy is seeking to be loved and to find a home. Nia is looking for something like a family. Maybe they donโ€™t have to look too far. But someone else is seeking the boy.

I would describe this book somewhat like an updated version of Star Trek. Each section felt like an episode of the show: futuristic space travel, strange worlds, and an evil corporation ruling Allied Space. Jimenez brings in some great diversity within his characters and shows that love knows no bounds. His writing is wonderful and vivid. But for me, I couldnโ€™t quite put it all together. I think those of you sci-fi lovers will truly enjoy this one.
