When I heard this described as a book for fans of The Insivible Life of Addie LaRue and Life of Pi, I knew I had to read it.
In 1885, Aubry was only nine when a curse came upon her because she wouldnโt sacrifice her puzzle ball into a well.
Young Aubry finds herself in a dire situation – she begins having seizures and bleeding from her mouth, nose, and ears – the only remedy – is to move away from her current location. Leaving her family behind, she embarks on an incredible, often perilous journey.
This story becomes a magical, adventurous, philosophical journey as Aubry can not stay in the same location for more than three days, and she can not go back the way she had already come. We travel with her through many beautiful countries and many mystical places. Yet she gets into some precarious situations, and itโs as if something or someone is hunting her down. It’s impressive that she could build friendships and have lovers along the way, but Aubry is a wonder herself.
I would go into this with an imaginative sense, not questioning the hows but instead watching for the growth and wisdom in Aubry as she travels the world and connects with others. There are lessons for those who love to unpack the narrative, or you can sit back and enjoy this magnificent journey.
