Dear Reader,

My name is Luke Edgewood, and there are few things in life that I require. Mainly black coffee. And flannel. And lots of solitude. And my dogs, Chewy and Indie. What I don’t need is romance, so I have no plans to change my thirty-year-old bachelor status anytime soon.

But my youngest sister thinks that by accepting a short-term construction job in the small European country of Skymar, I’m going to follow along in her footsteps and discover my own romantic adventure. Nope. Bah humbug. The End. This time, her rom-com-movie senses are totally wrong.

Or maybe not. Because I’ve met a Grace Kelly look-alike who is annoying . . . until she isn’t. But she is impossible. As in, nothing can happen between us because she is a literal princess. Even though that’s easy to forget when we’re working together to restore a castle-like orphanage in a secluded mountain town and “forced proximity” includes a small closet, a secret one-hundred-year-old journal, and the tactile memory of an off-limits royal in my arms.

Basically, the whole situation has turned into an ooey gooey magical snow globe of romantic tropes complete with cute kids and an actual ball. Now, even my sentences are starting to sound like mush. Ugh. Send high levels of testosterone my way—I’m going to need it.

Everyone thinks Lucy killed her best friend, Savvy. Granted, it doesn’t look good, and Lucy can’t remember what happened. Lucy had moved away from Texas because she couldn’t stand all the hate, but she returned for her feisty grandma’s 80th birthday. Ben Owens, a true-crime podcaster, just happens to be in her hometown too. He wants to get the scoop, and this time, Lucy decides to work with him – she wants the truth. 

I loved Lucy! Her snark and sass were inappropriate and hilarious. I needed to know if she was unreliable or if something else was going on here. The pace never lagged, plus with great dialogue, I was always entertained.

The Hidden Realm of Angolin has had a self-imposed policy of isolation; they have lived this way for centuries. Until an enemy discovers them and, of course, is determined to conquer them. 

If you’re a science fiction fan, this book is for you.

The author’s world-building was cinematic, vividly describing the places, spaces, and atmosphere.

I appreciated how terms for technology and equipment weren’t over-explained. For instance, “the PTS and light-bending taroc fiber hid him excellently.” This allowed me to feel like a part of their world and be immersed in the story. 

There was plenty of action and combat as the protagonist, Lieutenant Dharmen Tate, learned of a plot by some of his fellow Angolinian officers to join forces with the enemy invaders. Dharmen was a well-developed character as we got to see both his personal life and him as the hero battling for Angolin.

As you can see I enjoy Rea Frey’s books. 

Her latest, 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 is a thriller with missing persons, murder, betrayal, infidelity, and gossiping neighbors. 

Ruby is out for her morning row on the serene lake near her neighborhood when she sees a body floating on the calm surface. 

Her neighbors quickly surmise the body must be that of Tom, Ruby’s husband, who had disappeared.

This is a true domestic thriller where everyone has secrets that are revealed slowly. I can’t say too much, or I’ll give the twists and turns away. But the story jumps between then and now – and we find out that Ruby’s daughter, Lily, disappeared first and then her husband. 

You would think Ruby’s neighbors would be more sympathetic if this were her dead husband. But when you read the neighborhood forums posted sporadically throughout the book – we see some of their true natures emerge. More murders occur, and you are left to put the pieces together. 

I was unsure if Ruby was supposed to be an unreliable narrator – as she is the only one who cannot identify the body as her husband. I did enjoy that the neighborhood had a murder mystery group called the “Murderlings,” and now they are part of a murder mystery!

Most of us may find something to relate to in 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭. I know I did. 

Olivia is in that phase of life where she is putting everyone’s needs ahead of her own; maybe she has all along. She’s a mom and a wife, but she’s lonely and feeling down.

Patricia is Olivia’s next-door neighbor, and she’s a top town realtor. Although Olivia finds Patricia rude and abrasive, she also feels Patricia has her life together. So when Patricia offers her a job as her assistant she grabs it. 

The story becomes twofold: a self-discovery journey and a stressful but emotional friendship story. Patricia tells Olivia about the “Me List” – things she wants to accomplish each year to push herself to do. Olivia begins her own list – time to think about herself. But, as she and Patricia’s relationship changes from employer/employee to maybe friends, things get messy.

This was a very realistic read. As I mentioned, the characters and what they were going through: marriages falling apart, a sick parent, caring for children, addictions, money issues, etc., made them flawed but relatable. Sometimes, I found Patricia a little too toxic, but Olivia was a saint. I appreciated that both women admit that friendship does not come easy to them, but you can see that, in the end, it’s something worth working for.
