This is the sequel to THE GIRL IN THE CORN, and I recommend reading them in order for clarity.

Although I’m not a big horror fan, this series intrigued me because it involved an element of fantasy and even brought in a bit of dark humor. 

THE BOY FROM TWO WORLDS involves an evil fairy who is set out for revenge as she is devouring souls, a boy from two worlds who has superpowers, and Thomas Cavanaugh, who must lead the battle against these forces lest the world be taken away into another. 

This book will appeal to horror, thriller, or fantasy readers. It has a sinister, eerie feel and strange and diabolical characters. There’s something more disturbing about kids with evil powers, right? The scenes at the carnival felt straight out of a horror movie—creepy yet cinematic.

Monty and Max were California brothers who loved to surf. It was their thing, always together, until that day Monty felt something different in the water—the day Max was attacked by a shark. 

Monty’s grief, guilt, and fears are all expressed very well. He ran away from California to Nebraska, a landlocked state. He never told his family, wife, or old friends the details of those moments in the water with the shark and Max.

But the sharks and the guilt continue to circle in his head. 

Monty returns to California for his sister’s wedding; memories confront him like waves crashing on the sand. 

As much as I literally shivered whenever Monty flashed back to him and Max in the water that day, I found it a bit hard to like Monty. My heart went out to him, but he was not looking at the people surrounding him, loving him but hurting as well.  

A visceral and fascinating dive into grief, survivor’s guilt, and the power of nature.

This truly is a love letter to bookstores, books, and book lovers. 

When the owner of Bruebaker’s Books falls ill, his daughters decide to close the store. However, longtime employee Jo Waterstone can’t imagine that is what Mr. Bruebaker wants, nor can she imagine life without the store. 

Jo barricades herself in the store with a few other faithful employees. It becomes one big sleepover in a bookstore! Although it sounds like a dream to us book lovers, Jo, and her co-workers must decide where their priorities lie and who and what matters as life’s complications arise. 

This is filled with great book references and warm and caring characters (even a few villains — those non-book lovers). It is about community, working together, friendship, and, yes, books.

Zoey Woodland wants to believe in finding her happily ever after but things are going a little… weird. 

She just signed her divorce papers, and her ex (or X, as he is referred to) is sending her roses. Then Reynesh, her new neighbor, shows up on her doorstep. He’s handsome and quite charming, but he’s also developed a new relationship app and Zoey doesn’t believe love is programmable.

Although Zoey is studying to be a relationship coach, she feels a little adrift. It doesn’t help that her very pushy sister, Tiffany, keeps telling her what to do, even if it is with good intentions. Reynesh and Tiffany both try to help Zoey get her business off the ground, but her sister does some other meddling to help jump-start this thing between Zoey and Reynesh.

This is a quick and fun read, with characters popping in and out of Zoey’s day. With a little bit of magical realism, this becomes a cute and quirky love story.

This is the final book of the 𝑆𝑐𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑜𝑛 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦, and while I had not read the prior two books, I quickly fell into step with the characters in this one. 

I was intrigued by the title, its meaning, and its bearing on the story. I hope it’s not a spoiler to tell you it’s an old Welsh Proverb meaning, “A little discomfort never hurt anyone.”

As I read further and spent time in Scranton, Pennsylvania, I was immersed in life in the ‘50s. I loved all the references to daily life, everyday items, and events that put me back in that time and place. Ultimately, it was the characters, their relationships, loves, and hardships that kept me glued to the page.

The author does an impressive job of weighing the themes of grief, prejudices, poverty, and generational secrets; there’s even a touch of the paranormal.

I love books that capture a snapshot of life and how things can readily change. 𝐃𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 does just that as it follows Betsabé “Bets” Ruiz in her new high powered Wall Street job right out of college.

The story, a loose retelling of the Bible story of David and Bathsheba, is written as a letter to Betsabé’s unborn son. She tells of her journey of hard work, family heritage, and a complicated love affair with her boss. 

Although the pace was unhurried, the author masterfully included several elements that kept it intriguing and exciting. Bets’ forbidden romance, office politics, the Covid pandemic, pregnancy, loss, and friendships are integral to her growth and maturity. 

I paired my reading with the gifted audiobook from @librofm, and it helped me connect to Bets even more.
