Although I enjoyed 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐬, I’m slightly at a loss as to how to describe it. Is it supposed to be satirical, with a deep philosophical meaning? Or was it just a quirky, sex-infused comedy? I walked away from it thinking the latter, but something buzzed in my head that I had missed something; maybe it was all the talk of bees and bugs.

In short, this is about Greta, who transcribes sessions for Om, a sex therapist. Listening in on some of the sessions provides much of the humor, especially as Greta interjects her own thoughts and feelings. But the story takes off when Greta becomes fascinated with a patient she has nicknamed “Big Swiss.”

When the two meet each other by chance, they embark on a somewhat peculiar affair. Greta knows Big Swiss’s deepest, most personal thoughts, all things she has shared with Om, but Big Swiss doesn’t know that Greta knows this or that she even works for Om. This will not bode well in the end, as you can imagine. 

Beagin’s writing is sharp and witty, but if you’re looking for a cute romance, I think you need to see this as more eccentric. The characters themselves are interesting. Both Greta and Big Swiss have trauma in their pasts, and this plays out in the narrative. But Om’s character is the one that had me laughing most often; he was definitely the comic relief.

If you’re looking for an adorable, fun, and slightly chaotic holiday romance – this is the book for you!

I loved Ellie; she’s a bit of a loveable mess when on Christmas Eve she meets a woman in a bookstore and in one magical night, she falls head over heels.

But the next day she finds it was just that, one night. And she lost her job too! 

Ellie finds work at a local coffee shop where she befriends the shop’s landlord, Andrew. During a conversation over too many drinks, Andrew proposes to Ellie. Well, it’s a marriage agreement  – he needs to get married to get his inheritance, and he will give Ellie money to ease her financial burden. 

It all sounds good on paper until Ellie and Andrew go to his family’s cabin for the holidays. There Andrew introduces Ellie to his sister, Jack (Jacqueline), the woman from the bookstore, the woman Ellie fell for that one magical night. Oh yeah, this is going to be interesting.

What ensues is a very crazy, tense family holiday. But the banter is awesome, and the family provides some fun moments. The grandmas are boozing, and Ellie’s not the only one with a secret crush!
