I’ve read Valerie Taylor’s books before, so I knew I was in for a good time. 

𝐀 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 is a delightful, cozy mystery set in the charming seaside town of Chatham Crossing in New England. 

It’s summertime, and the fun festivities are in full swing with the tourists in town. Venus Bixby, a widow, owns the music store Oldies & Goodies, which also sells baked goods, hence the name. 

Venus has her big 50th birthday celebration coming up, and she’s the Grand Marshal of the 4th of July parade.

But when Venus trips over a pair of orange sandals attached to a body in the local Whaling Museum’s gardens, it sets off a murder investigation. 

As I expected, this was filled with sassy, snarky characters and tons of laughs – with food always on hand. Venus is a suspect in the murder but that doesn’t stop her from snooping around, and her gal pals are there to help!

This is a perfect beach read. This cozy mystery will have you smiling and craving a cookie or two — a good thing the author included a Spotify playlist and yummy recipes.

Caroline Beckett may be a celebrity life coach, but her life is about to go up in flames. 

While Caroline is busy promoting her new book and building her brand when things start to fall apart. An incriminating video of her husband surfaces, and Devorah, Caroline’s old mentor, makes accusatory claims.

Why do we take pleasure in others’ misery? Although we shouldn’t, watching Caroline’s life implode was sometimes quite humorous. She just couldn’t win. Leaving one dumpster fire behind, she heads back to her hometown of Cape Cod to deal with another. 

This book worked so well for me because of Caroline and Devorah. They were great characters and quite opposite; despite that, they are friends, even though time and life have gotten between them. Devorah was older and very cantankerous. She had been Caroline’s professor and mentor, and now she was claiming Caroline had stolen her ideas for the book. But when the two women reunite, there are big things at play and lessons to learn, even if time is running out. 

Other great elements include a sprinkling of philosophy, reuniting with a high school sweetheart, and a roller-coaster of emotions. Set mainly on Cape Cod, it was a fun beach read with a lot of spunk.

From meeting over a silly social media post to a belief in a dating curse, Justin and Emma hit it off immediately. But both of them have a lot going on in their lives. It’s precisely the wrong time to meet, potentially the right one. 

So they are going to fake a relationship – Just for the summer, to try to break this curse they both seem to have. Yeah, good luck with that when you’re both clearly falling in love! 

This book tackled some heavy topics, making me love these characters even more. Justin cared for his family, especially his siblings, and it melted my heart. He was also so tender and sensitive with Emma, who has unresolved issues from her past. As she works through them, Justin, with the guidance of Maddy, Emma’s best friend, gives her room to breathe.  

From Justin’s dating surveys and the daring lake crossing on a unicorn floaty, there is the right balance of humor to lighten the heavy moments. The banter and chemistry are once again on point – it’s what I’ve come to love about Abby Jimenez’s books. 

As this is part of the 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 Universe, I loved visiting with some of the crossover characters and putting their stories together.

I adored 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐞, so I was thrilled that fun-loving GUP – gay uncle Patrick – was back. Patrick is traveling with his niece and nephew through Europe to get to their father’s wedding in Italy, which the kids are not too keen about. While Patrick is still his fabulous self, the kids are older, and thus, this is seasoned with a bit more sage advice than humor and laughs. But you can’t help but have a great time when you’re with GUP, even if his position of favorite is threatened by the LAUNT (lesbian aunt).

If you’re a romance reader who loves having your heart torn apart by a couple you wish would be together, this book is for you! Finn and Liv put me through the wringer, whew. Finn and Liv met six summers ago, and with each summer Finn returned to Liv, until one summer, everything changed. Although romantic and angsty, it still aptly explores the burden of grief and loss. This has a great cast of characters, and the shifting timeline allows the plot to unfold gently – just hold on to your heart. 

🎧I loved listening to the audiobooks for both these books – they were amazing!

Kristy Woodson Harvey has become an author I can automatically pick up her books and know I will enjoy them. And she did it again with 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬. She has a remarkable ability to tug at your heart while making sure you close the book with a smile. 

Daphne, Lanier, and Mary Stuart became best of friends one summer at Camp Holly Springs which is owned by Daphne’s Aunt, June. The three friends help each other with the “hard things” in life. But now, years later, when they learn that June is closing the camp, the friends must band together to save what brought them together. 

This is an emotional but celebratory story of friendship, family, and community. It reminded me of my teenage friendships and how important they were to me. Although I didn’t go to summer camp like these friends, we did go camping, hang out by the lake and build bonfires. It made me hungry for s’mores! A perfect book to add to your summer reading list.

As much as Bea has tried to set aside her feelings for Kia, things get stirred up when a new production assistant enters their circle. Theodora is stunning, as well as gunning her way to become a movie producer in her own right. But she’s got secrets and tricks – doesn’t everyone in Hollywood?

This had the perfect Hollywood vibe! Set in the 1970s, it displayed the glamorous partying lifestyle, as well as the backstabbing that went on in this crowd. I enjoyed Bea as a character; she was on the fringe of the group, yet was very observant. The romance and mystery build as you go from Hollywood to the South of France. I will say the ending was a bit of a letdown, but it didn’t detract from the overall sexy and vivid feel of the story. This would be a great poolside read!

Avery Lansing Crawford is returning to her small hometown in Alabama with her two young children and her new status of divorcee. She is sure she will be fodder for gossip, especially since she was the designer on a home renovation TV show – which she also lost due to her husband’s cheating.

Avery is surprised when her childhood friend Cole Whitaker offers her a job with his survivors of human trafficking project. It seems like a great opportunity to help out and to jump-start her career, plus she wouldn’t mind spending time with Cole. 

Although it touches on divorce, infidelity, and human trafficking, it never really gets very deep or dark. It is more of a breezy story with an air of forgiveness and love. And it definitely has that Southern small-town feel. It’s not just two childhood friends getting a second chance at love that makes this one sweet, but you have Avery’s grandmother who stirs up a hornet’s nest by sticking her nose in Avery’s love life. 

If you enjoy generational stories and second-chance romance, then 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 will delight you.

Talk about a perfect beach read! 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧 is set in the small sunny California town of Alara Cove. Nikki Graziola basically grew up on a surfboard and never dreamed that she would be named class valedictorian at an elite academy.

But when Nikki loses her best friend, Mark just before graduation, she knows she must speak the truth, even if it costs her her future.

I loved the small-town coastal atmosphere. And as the book is set up in parts, I felt like this is as much a coming-of-age story as it was a romance. Susan Wiggs weaves in family issues and the town being run by a vile family so the story has depth. There are characters you will be rooting for and others you will love to hate. 

Full of sand, surf, secrets, loss, and love, 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧 is a great book to spend a #summerday with.

An atmospheric coming-of-age story set on a Greek Isle, that recounts an affair between a teenager and an older man. Rachel, only 17 at the time, was blinded by the attention she received by Alister, a wealthy businessman. Jump ahead, and Rachel, now in her thirties, hears disturbing reports of what kind of man Alister truly was, and must reexamine her fantasy of their love affair. This took me a while to get into, but the ending is certainly worth it, as it drives home the point of how we look back at the past and our youth.
